Current Event w/summary Due EVERY Thursday
Students can use any CURRENT source of news for their articles. This is NOT research. Do not use an encyclopedia, Wikipedia or a database like Web M.D. to "look up" a topic. These articles should come from current news sources including Internet news, local newspapers and magazines. I will give you some examples here, but I'm sure you can find many more sources for news!
The point of the current event is to encourage our students to read more, and read for fun as well as increased learning. Students who read well and read often do better on standardized tests than their peers. In Biology, we also use current events to show students how much of our news is based on science! It really is in everything.
Students will need to cut out, print out or make a copy of the article they choose. Read the article and then write a one paragraph summary of the article in their own words! Sum up what the main point of the article is, and then tell how it is connected to science (if it's not obvious) and tell how the information in the article might relate to you.

Science Daily
A great source for current science-related articles, updated daily. Articles are divided into areas depending on what you might be interested in.
Smartphone? Ipad?
I highly recommend using Zite to collect your news articles from the web. It's great on the iPad, but works just as well on the iPhone. Set up Zite and it will start learning which newsources and types of articles you like to read. If you combine Zite with another app called Pocket, you can save your articles for later use or reading on any device.

Use Pocket to collect and store articles that you can read anytime on any device anywhere! You sign up for a pocket account one time, you can use that to access your Pocket account from any computer. There is a pocket app for the iPad/iPhone, and several apps, like Zite, will save articles directly to Pocket for you.
